Welcome to St Peter's Church
Our Norman Church of St Peter's was one of 500 Suffolk Churches recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086.
Since 1914 it has been in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. It forms part of the united Benefice with Brent Eleigh, Monks Eleigh, Chelsworth and Kettlebaston.
St Peter's is located along Church Road adjacent to the playing field and is nestled in the heart of the community with the Village Pavilion and playing field.
You are welcome to visit our church all year round, which is in the most quintessential setting. It offers a wonderful place for quite reflection and thought, and it is well worth going off the beaten track to visit to discover its rich history.
History
St Peter’s Church Milden has a history stretching back to at least the Domesday Book (1086) and likely had a wooden predecessor to the current 13thCentury stone building.
Significant changes occurred in 1866 with a large restoration that rebuilt the chancel and reused stone from a tower that collapsed in the 1820s to build a new porch and vestry. The current building, though much restored, retains Norman elements, including the nave and possibly the font.
The present building incorporates elements like the 15th century window, fragments of 13th century wall paintings, an Alington alabaster memorial from 1627, and oak choir stalls from a redundant church.
It was listed as a Grade 1 building in 2021 and is a testament to over nine centuries of continuous church presence in Milden.
